Issues & Comments
In response to your email regarding support for soldiers fighting over seas, and in particular any email offering prayers and messages of support, I offer the following comments with respect as a Viet Nam vet and committed peace activist.
1. I believe that every message of support for troops should include a call for an immediate peace, and safe return of the men and women fighting overseas.
2. A call for peace reflects a fundamental tenet of all the great religions of the world and is in my view the best way to support our troops.
3. Among the Canadian and American soldiers fighting overseas there are women and men of many faiths and beliefs which is often not recognized.
4. Among the soldiers being fought there are also men and women of many faiths and to demonize them is neither Christian or consistent with religious or moral values.
5. The killing of innocent children, women and men is as wrong in war as it is in a terrorist attack, or any other act of violence.
6. If I knew then what I know now, I would not have fought in Viet Nam. Instead I would have done everything I could have to oppose the war and save rather than take lives.
